Family Witnesses Tragedy as Great White Strikes

Shirley Durdin Became First Fatal Victim in a Decade

In a harrowing incident that has sent shockwaves through the Australian community, a 34-year-old mother of four was tragically killed by a great white shark on Sunday. The victim, identified as Shirley Durdin, was snorkeling in the waters of Peake Bay South when the deadly attack occurred.

According to witnesses, Durdin was diving for scallops when the shark attacked, tearing her head from her body in a gruesome scene. Her three children and other horrified bathers watched in disbelief as the tragedy unfolded.

Durdin's death marks the first fatal shark attack in South Australia in over a decade. Prior to this incident, there had been no reported fatalities in the area since 1985.

The Australian Shark-Incident Database has recorded a total of 1068 shark attacks in Australia, with 237 of them being fatal. The majority of attacks have occurred in New South Wales and Western Australia, with South Australia having a relatively low incidence rate.

The tragic death of Shirley Durdin has highlighted the need for increased shark safety measures and awareness in Australian waters. Experts are urging swimmers and divers to exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings when entering the ocean.
